National Cancer Survivor Day – Sunday, June 6, 2021

The 34th annual National Cancer Survivors Day® is Sunday, June 6th. It is a celebration day for survivors, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, and a time for awareness and community outreach. The American Cancer Society notes that cancer affects 1 in 3 people in the United States. Most likely you or someone you know has been affected by cancer.

What is cancer?
Cancer is an uncontrolled abnormality of cells that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer types divide into groups according to the type of cell they start in. They include carcinomas, lymphomas, leukemias, brain tumors, and sarcomas. Cancer can affect any part of the body – both inside and out.

Early Screening and Diagnosis
Early screening and diagnosis remain the most effective ways to treat and provide successful survival outcomes. Individuals need to recognize changes in their bodies and ask questions if something is not right. Remember, you know your own body. Early detection is the key.

Cancer Stages
Once cancer is found, tests detect the size, and whether or not it is spreading to other parts of the body. This is called the cancer stage. The difference in stages is a means of choosing proper treatment. Stage 1 or 2 cancers have not spread much, while stages 3 or 4 indicate cancer has spread more and aggressive treatment might be necessary.
