From the Philippines to a New Life in the U.S.: Erny Sarmiento’s Story

There was a time when working in the United States felt possible for Erny Emmanuel Sarmiento, but still very far away.

He was working as a Medical Technologist in the Philippines, gaining experience, strengthening his skills, and imagining what his career could become. He knew he wanted to grow professionally and create greater opportunities for himself and his family. What he could not know was exactly how long it would take to get there.

For Erny, healthcare had always carried a deeper sense of purpose. Medical Technologists may spend much of their careers behind the scenes, but the work happening inside the laboratory can influence what happens next for a patient. The results produced in the lab help healthcare teams make decisions about diagnoses and treatment, and knowing his work could contribute to someone’s care gave Erny a reason to keep growing in the profession.

That same sense of purpose stayed with him when he decided to pursue his career in the United States.

The journey was not quick. There were documents to complete, exams to prepare for, plans to make, and long periods of waiting. What had once been an exciting goal sometimes became an exercise in patience.

Through those periods, Erny kept returning to the reason he had started. He wanted more opportunities professionally, but his dream was bigger than himself. Reaching the United States would represent something meaningful for his family, too. Having a support system throughout the process helped him stay focused when the finish line still seemed far away.

Eventually, years of preparation led to a moment he had imagined countless times: his first day working in the United States.

It was exciting. It was also overwhelming.

Suddenly, everything around him was different. There was a new environment to understand, a new workflow to learn, and new people to meet. Yet underneath all of that uncertainty was pride. He had reached the moment that once felt so distant.

As the days passed, the unfamiliar began becoming familiar. Erny learned new systems and gained new experiences in the laboratory. His confidence as a Medical Technologist grew. At the same time, something was changing outside of work as well.

He was becoming more independent and adaptable. He was building a life in a country he had previously known from thousands of miles away. And for the first time, places he had once seen only in photographs or movies became places he could actually visit.

Travel became one of the unexpected joys of the experience. Erny began exploring different parts of the United States and meeting fellow Explorers along the way. Each new place became another reminder of how dramatically his world had expanded.

Looking back, Erny describes his journey as transformational.

Not simply because he moved from the Philippines to the United States or because his career changed, but because of the person he became along the way. The uncertainty taught him patience. The challenges strengthened his resilience. The years of preparation showed him what could happen when he remained committed to a goal even when he could not see exactly when it would happen.

That perspective is also what Erny hopes to share with healthcare professionals who are still waiting for their opportunity.

He knows what it feels like to be on the other side of the journey, completing requirements and wondering when the dream will finally feel real. Now, he can look back at that version of himself and see that those years were not empty waiting. They were part of the story.

Today, working in the United States represents years of preparation, sacrifice, and hope shared with the people who supported him from the beginning. His career has grown, his world has gotten bigger, and possibilities that once seemed distant have become part of his everyday life.

Perhaps that is what makes Erny’s story worth telling.

Sometimes the biggest transformation is not simply reaching the place you have been working toward. It is looking back once you arrive and realizing how much you grew on the way there.
