AI has dominated the headlines over the past year. From ChatGPT to deep fake videos and social media algorithms, AI is changing the way we consume and use information. But how will this transformative technology change how we provide healthcare?

In this month’s episode of Journey: A MedPro Podcast, host Vanessa explores the advances and ramifications of AI in healthcare and how this evolving technology may impact providers and patients. Joining her in the discussion is guest Dan, MedPro’s Director of Digital Strategy and Innovation. Dan helps teams leverage modern technologies and processes to ultimately improve the candidate experience. Dan is an expert in the field, with over 15 years of technology management experience. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Information management at Tilburg University.

History
Host Vanessa (Right) discusses the impact of AI on healthcare with guest Dan.

AI is not a recent phenomenon. Its origins date back to 1956 when three scientists presented the Logic Theorist, a program designed to mimic human problem-solving skills at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence. AI is considered a general-purpose technology like the wheel or electricity, and experts expect it to have a dramatic impact on society. “People are already using ChatGPT every day in the workplace,” said Dan.

Implementation

However, the reach of technology far exceeds one’s ability to articulate an idea. “It’s easy to see how it would be implemented in healthcare administratively, and this could free up nurses and physicians to spend more time with the patient.” Additionally, AI is expected to improve diagnostics and disease detection, create personalized treatment plans, and monitor treatment effectiveness and health metrics. “AI has performed better than some physicians in analyzing X-rays and MRIs,” said Dan. “The question many are asking is, ‘Will AI take my job?’” But the more accurate question may be, “How is AI going to impact my job.”
