Finding His Place: A Medtech’s American Journey

The simple pleasures in life—a good night’s sleep, home-cooked meals, and spending time with friends are now the highlights of Noel’s American Journey. Since settling in New Port Richey, Florida, two and a half years ago, the medical laboratory scientist has built a close-knit, supportive community, blending fellow Filipinos and American friends from church. This new social circle welcomed him like a member of their family, and though he is thousands of miles away from home, Noel enjoys a sense of belonging and connection in his new residence. His journey underscores a critical yet often overlooked reality for healthcare professionals: the dual challenge of career advancement and personal resettlement. Beyond building a successful career, foreign-educated healthcare professionals must navigate the complexities of starting a new life in a foreign country.

Quezon City to New Port Richey
Noel shares a meal with his “American family.”

Originally from Quezon City, Philippines, Noel didn’t aspire to become a U.S. healthcare professional, but on a visit to the States, he sensed that “there was more to life waiting for me here.” From the start of his journey, Noel says that MedPro provided him with the guidance and assistance needed to succeed. While Noel smoothly transitioned into his new environment, he heard stories of struggle from direct hires assigned to different facilities. “I am profoundly grateful that I haven’t faced the same hardships others have.” From his initial sign-on to gaining permanent residency, MedPro provided Noel with a seamless experience.

Like all Explorers, Noel has a support team assisting him at every stage of his journey.  His Employee Relations Manager (ERM) addresses Noel’s concerns or issues and ensures they are handled promptly.

“It’s like having a supportive friend who looks after you and checks in on you occasionally and whenever needed.” Noel is incredibly grateful to his previous ERM, Stephanie, and his current ERM, Melanie. “Their dedication and responsiveness have truly made a positive impact on my experience, and I deeply appreciate their hard work and commitment.”

Community

As an MLS at a hospital in New Port Richey, Noel finds immense satisfaction in contributing to patient care. His work in the lab, performing tests and analyzing results, provides crucial information for clinicians to make informed decisions. Knowing that his efforts directly impact patient outcomes is incredibly rewarding, he says.

Outside of his Filipino community and church friends, Noel has spent his free time traveling, exploring Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Chicago, Washington D.C., and his favorite, New York City. Next on his list is the West Coast.

His assignment in New Port Richey ends in just a few months, and then he will have to decide if he wants to stay or move. “Beyond the city’s convenient location, it’s the incredible people and the welcoming community that have made such a deep impact on me. The friendships I’ve formed here, both with fellow Filipinos and Americans, make me want to stay. The warmth and kindness of this community have made me feel at home in a way I never expected.” Noel is considering staying after his contract ends, but he’s also eager to check out new opportunities.

Turing Dreams Into Reality

From the start, Noel’s journey was one of professional and personal growth. His family placed no expectations for financial support or assistance on him. However, it’s been rewarding for Noel “to give back and make them happy in any way I can.” His family, especially his mom, have supported his dreams and goals in the U.S. “She wants me to enjoy the experience, make the most of this opportunity, and stay true to God’s calling.”

Coming to a foreign country to pursue a career and start a new life is never easy. Explorers face an array of challenges. Far from home, comfort zones are shattered, and homesickness can be overwhelming. It’s easy to feel lost in new and strange surroundings and wonder if the “American Dream” is even real. But, for many, like Noel, their faith and perseverance become their guiding stars. Despite facing adversity, he chose to trust the process and his faith in God and slowly turn that dream into reality.  “Each day gets better and brings you closer to your goals. Before you know it, you’ll look back and realize that you are living not just the ‘American Dream,’ but the life you were destined to.”
