Celebrating the Fourth of July: Experiencing One of America’s Most Cherished Traditions

Every year on July 4, communities across the United States come together to celebrate Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July. For many international healthcare professionals beginning a new chapter in the U.S., this holiday offers a unique opportunity to experience American culture, connect with local communities, and create lasting memories.

What Is Independence Day?

The Fourth of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. More than two centuries later, the holiday continues to celebrate the nation’s history, freedom, and the values that have shaped the United States.

In 2026, the celebration is especially meaningful as the country marks its 250th anniversary, making this year’s Independence Day festivities even more memorable.

How Americans Celebrate

Across the country, people celebrate in a variety of ways. While traditions may differ from one community to another, you’ll often find families, friends, and neighbors gathering to enjoy the summer holiday together.

Some of the most common Fourth of July traditions include:

  • Watching fireworks displays after sunset
  • Attending local parades and community festivals
  • Hosting backyard barbecues and picnics
  • Spending the day at the beach, a park, or by the pool
  • Wearing red, white, and blue to show patriotic spirit
  • Enjoying live music and outdoor entertainment

Many cities also host free public events, making it easy to join the celebration and experience the excitement firsthand.

What to Expect

Since Independence Day is a federal holiday, many government offices, banks, post offices, and some businesses may be closed or operate on limited hours. Grocery stores, restaurants, and retail shops are often open, although they may have adjusted schedules.

If you’re working in healthcare, your facility may continue operating as usual. Hospitals and healthcare organizations provide essential care every day of the year, including holidays. If you’re scheduled to work, you may notice festive decorations, themed meals, or small celebrations organized by your team to recognize the occasion.

Firework Safety

Fireworks are one of the most recognizable parts of Independence Day, but it’s important to celebrate safely.

If you’re planning to watch fireworks, consider attending a professional community display rather than using personal fireworks. If you choose to use legal fireworks where permitted, always follow local laws and safety guidelines, keep a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks without appropriate supervision.

Pets can also become frightened by loud noises, so be mindful if you have animals at home.

A Chance to Experience American Culture

One of the most rewarding parts of living and working in the United States is experiencing traditions that bring communities together. Whether you’re attending your first neighborhood barbecue, watching fireworks light up the night sky, or simply spending time with friends and coworkers, Independence Day is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about American culture while building new connections.
