Throughout April, we honor occupational therapists (OT) and their contributions to healthcare. OTs around the world, including our Explorers right here in the United States, profoundly impact patients and empower them to participate in meaningful daily activities, overcome challenges, and achieve independence. From rehabilitation to community outreach programs, OTs play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.
Occupational therapists began working with patients in the early 1900s during World War I. Injured soldiers struggling with ADLs (activities of daily living) and IADLs (industrial activities of daily living), such as mobility, bathing, meal prep, driving, and more, benefitted greatly from OTs’ assistance. Before the War, OTs mainly worked in psychiatric hospitals. Their role expanded into orthopedic, neurological, cardiac, and psychiatric diagnoses post World War I, and then in the 1980s; their focus shifted to include health, safety, and illness prevention.
Occupational Therapy Timeline
- Late 18th to early 19th century: Occupational therapy emerges as a treatment for mental healthcare.
- 1917: The National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy (NSPOT) is founded, formally establishing occupational therapy as a profession in the US.
- 1923: Henry B. Favill School of Occupations in Chicago establishes the first OT educational program.
- 1940: OT is used to rehabilitate World War II veterans.
- 1960s: OT is expanded into hospitals, schools, healthcare settings, and community-based programs.
- 1976: American Occupational Therapy Foundation and NSPOT merge to form the American Occupational Therapy Association.
- 1980s and 1990s: OT evolves with more emphasis on evidence-based practices.
- 2000s and on: OT adapts to meet the needs of a changing society, including an older population, technological advancements, and shifting healthcare policies
The Role and Scope of Occupational Therapists
Today, OTs are highly skilled healthcare professionals trained to address a wide range of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges impacting patients’ ability to engage in everyday activities. They work in hospitals, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers, and community-based organizations, catering to each patient’s unique needs. They use a holistic approach to assess clients’ abilities, preferences, and environmental factors, helping OTs design personalized intervention plans to help patients achieve the desired results.
Whether working with children with developmental delays, adults recovering from injuries, or older adults with age-related conditions, occupational therapists help patients achieve independence, functionality, and an enhanced overall quality of life.
