Chief Moses

The city and lake owe their name to Chief Moses, a Columbia-Sinkiuse tribal leader. Before white settlers came to the area, his tribe inhabited the land. Today, Moses Lake and the surrounding county are not only known as an outdoor recreational destination, but Explorers will enjoy wineries, cideries, proximity to skiing, and the Gorge Amphitheater, a fantastic location for summer concerts. Explorers will enjoy a semi-arid climate with warm summers and frigid winters. January is the coldest month of the year, with lows averaging 23°F (-5°C) and typical highs only reaching 36°F (2.2°C). Summer’s hottest month is July, with lows of 59°F (15°C) but highs reaching all the way up to 90°F (32.2°C).

Explorers can enroll younger family members in the Moses Lake School District. The district has an overall Niche.com grade of C with an 18:1 student-teacher ratio. Big Bend Community College and Central Washington University offer Explorers and family members an opportunity to further their education.

Explorers can take advantage of the Grant Transit Authority if they don’t have personal transportation. The GTA has multiple routes running Monday through Friday.

Wenatchee (EAT), one hour and 30 minutes away, and Spokane (GEG), two hours away, are the nearest airports to Moses Lake. Explorers can fly to U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, Miami, and New York from either of these airports and get connections to international destinations.

  • Lenore Caves Take a step back in time at Lenore Caves, which dates back more than 12,000 years to the Ice Age. Seven caves in total are sacred grounds for Native Americans.
  • Columbia National Wildlife Refuge Take in the majesty of rugged cliffs, canyons, and lakes at this nearly 30,000-acre natural park. Explorers will see plenty of migrating birds, coyotes, and more. Permitted recreational activities include boating, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, biking, snowmobiling, and more.
  • Surf ‘n Slide Water Park Enjoy a day of family fun at the water park. Visitors can enjoy the flowrider, lazy river, and tube slide. Lifeguards are present, along with a bathhouse, security lockers, and a concession stand.
  • Wineries  With more than a thousand wineries, Washington state is the second largest wine-producing state in the country behind California. Known for its whites, such as Riesling and Chardonnay, local producers have been especially successful with reds, producing award-winning Sauvignons, Merlots, and Syrahs. Wine aficionados will want to visit the state’s many wineries, and they can start right in Moses Lake at Camas Cove Cellars and Cascade Cellars.
  • The Gorge Amphitheatre One of America’s premier outdoor concert venues, the Gorge is a 20,000-plus-seat amphitheater hosting some of the biggest names and events in music. The summer 2024 lineup includes Imagine Dragons, Odesza, Dave Matthews, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 
  • Rodeo Bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc, bull riding, and more are all on display at the Moses Lake Roundup. Grab your hat and get ready for a rootin’ tootin’ good time.
  • Grand Coulee Dam Tours are available from May through the end of October, but the drive at sunset is always open and amazing. The dam also has laser light shows during the summer and early fall months.
