Meet Roy Indangan: MedPro’s Ultimate Welcome Guide

He is affectionately known by his Employee Relations Manager as MedPro International’s “Best Welcome Guide,” and his fellow Explorers wholeheartedly agree. Roy Indangan, a registered nurse, has been working in the United States for just over a year. In that short time, he has not only found a home for himself but also played a pivotal role in helping his fellow Explorers adjust to a new country, job, and culture.

Coming to America

“The best! Would recommend him for all Bridgeport explorers. He is amazing!” – Tasheka (Jamaica)

“Five stars out of five, Exceeds all expectations as a welcome guide!” – Hellen (Kenya)

Roy dedicated 11 years to nursing, including eight years as an emergency department nurse in the Philippines, before beginning his professional journey in the United States. Exhausted and drained, handling as many as 90-130 patients a shift, Roy was on the verge of giving up. But, in 2020, amidst the fear and uncertainty of the global pandemic, he decided to pursue a U.S. healthcare career. Although there were challenges along the way, Roy was able to successfully navigate the process with the support of MedPro International. They assisted him with credential processing, NCLEX and IELTS preparation, and covered his travel and accommodation expenses during his exams. This support ensured that Roy could fulfill all requirements without depleting his savings. On August 4, 2023, he arrived in the United States, ready to embark on his new journey.

Bridgeport, Connecticut

“When I came to Connecticut, I was super anxious, but having Roy as my welcome guide made my deployment easier. He always reaches out if I need anything, he helped me look for an apartment, purchase my car and he even tour me around Bridgeport to help me familiarize with the community.” – Chariza (Philippines)

Roy poses with two new Explorers. His assistance and experience help provide Explorers with a smooth transition and a greater chance for success.

Like all Explorers, Roy first came to Sunrise, Florida, and attended MedProU for a month-long orientation and preparation. From there, he transitioned to his new home and workplace. His first three months were difficult, adapting to a new workplace as an emergency department RN at a level 2 hospital, overcoming communication challenges, mastering new work tools such as the Epic healthcare software, and acclimating to his new home—Bridgeport, Connecticut. However, with his preceptor’s support and his continued determination, Roy found his footing.

In just a year, he has forged strong friendships within the emergency department, where he provides compassionate care to patients during their most vulnerable moments. However, it’s Roy’s work outside of his hospitals that has attracted fellow Explorers’ attention. As MedPro’s unofficial welcome guide, Roy leverages his own experiences to help new Explorers adapt to life and work in the US. He starts by warmly greeting them at the airport and introducing them to local attractions, then offers assistance with apartment searches and car shopping.

One of the most common challenges Explorers face when coming to the US is adjusting to the food. Many find it difficult to find the organic options they were accustomed to back home, and not all Asian cuisines are readily available. Another significant issue is homesickness; leaving behind the comfort of home, including family, friends, and familiar routines, can be a tough transition.

Starting anew in the U.S. and making friends can also be challenging, largely due to cultural differences. Americans often communicate in a direct and straightforward manner, while Filipinos tend to prioritize politeness and harmony, often relying on non-verbal cues like facial expressions and body language. These differences can make it difficult for Explorers to connect as they navigate their new environment. Still, through his efforts, Roy enhances the Explorers’ chances of a smooth transition while nurturing a strong sense of community within the MedPro family.

Connecticut is now home. Roy loves the open friendliness of its residents, gorgeous landscapes, and fall foliage, and he has become a huge New Haven pizza fan! With four days off each week, Roy makes the most of his time by hanging out with friends, taking road trips, and indulging in culinary adventures. He also stays active at the gym and enjoys visiting New York.

“The USA is one of the most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations in the world. Visiting different states has been incredibly exciting, allowing me to enjoy breathtaking scenic spots and local cuisines. In just one year, I’ve explored Florida, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, and I look forward to visiting Canada soon,” said Roy.

Dream Big

“He was so patient with me when I was landing at the Bridgeport Airport. He dropped me to my hotel and gave me food that he had bought for me. The following week, he took both my spouse and me to a buffet, an experience never to be forgotten. We are so grateful for him together with my ERM Theresa for connecting.” – Webber (Kenya)

Roy enjoys some of New Haven’s famous pizza with friends.

Roy is planning to earn a master’s in nursing and achieve financial stability so he can support his family back home. As his parents grow older, he hopes to repay them for their sacrifices.

Achieving a U.S. healthcare career hasn’t been easy, but Roy encourages others to “Dream Big.” “Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone; it’s through these experiences that you will grow and gain a deeper appreciation for life. There’s so much to learn beyond our familiar boundaries,” said Roy. “Consider pursuing a master’s degree, taking the NCLEX, and carefully choosing your preferred staffing agency.”

Roy had a special message for nurses facing retrogression. “Keep your hopes high.  It’s only temporary. Use this time to spend quality moments with your family, enhance your nursing skills, or pursue graduate studies. These efforts will significantly benefit you when you start working in the US.”
