Summer Safety Tips: Staying Safe While Enjoying the Season

Summer is one of the best times to get outside, explore new places, and make memories with friends and family. Whether you’re visiting a national park, relaxing at the beach, or taking a weekend road trip, warmer weather brings countless opportunities for adventure.

As you enjoy everything the season has to offer, it’s also important to keep safety in mind. A little preparation can go a long way in helping you have a fun and worry-free summer.

Here are a few simple tips to help you stay safe this summer.

Stay Hydrated

High temperatures can lead to dehydration more quickly than you may realize, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.

Carry a reusable water bottle, drink water throughout the day, and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate. If you’re hiking, exercising, or spending extended periods in the sun, increase your water intake accordingly.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Spending time outdoors is one of the best parts of summer, but too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn and heat-related illnesses.

Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before heading outside and reapply it every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. Wearing sunglasses, a hat, and lightweight clothing can also help protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Be Smart Around Water

Whether you’re enjoying a beach, lake, or swimming pool, water safety should always be a priority.

Never swim alone, pay attention to posted safety signs, and avoid diving into unfamiliar water. If you’re boating or participating in water sports, always wear a properly fitted life jacket.

Prepare for Outdoor Adventures

If you’re planning to hike or visit one of the many beautiful national parks across the United States, plan ahead before you go.

Wear comfortable footwear, bring plenty of water and snacks, check the weather forecast, and let someone know where you’re going if you’ll be exploring remote areas. Staying on marked trails also helps protect both you and the environment.

Practice Heat Safety

Summer temperatures can become extreme in many parts of the country.

If you’re spending time outdoors, try to schedule activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as the morning or evening. Take breaks in the shade or indoors when needed, and be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headache, nausea, and excessive sweating.

Stay Safe While Traveling

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons in the United States.

Before heading out on a road trip, check your vehicle, plan your route, and make sure your phone is fully charged. If you’re visiting a new city or attraction, be aware of your surroundings and keep your personal belongings secure.
