It all started with a few simple words of encouragement—Leslie’s mother told her that becoming a nurse could open doors to career opportunities in the United States. Filipino nurses have played a vital role in the U.S. healthcare system since the early 1900s, and Leslie aspired to join the ranks of more than 150,000 Filipino nurses who have migrated to the US over the past 65 years. However, her journey was not without its challenges. The COVID lockdown in 2020 and retrogression three years later delayed her progress. But last October, Leslie arrived at MedPro International headquarters in Sunrise, Florida, ready to embark on her U.S. healthcare career.
Welcome to Belleville, Illinois

While Explorers may not be familiar with Belleville, this small town in Illinois is home to many international healthcare workers and immigrants. “Adjusting to Belleville wasn’t difficult. It’s a small town, but it offers plenty of opportunities and a peaceful, safe environment,” said Leslie.
The city’s oak tree canopy and quaint downtown square stand in stark contrast to Leslie’s previous residence—Saudi Arabia. She worked in the Kingdom for several years before getting her MedPro International assignment. “I was always exhausted after work. Plus, I couldn’t drive in Saudi Arabia. I had to rely on buses for everyday tasks like grocery shopping. But here in the US, it’s an entirely different culture.” Here she is independent. It was hard in the beginning. But now she has a car and an apartment, and she hopes to buy a house in a year.
Teamwork
As an ER nurse, Leslie is always busy at work. There’s never a shortage of patients.
“It was a little scary at first, but I quickly realized I was part of a strong team. Someone is always willing to help,” said Leslie. “I feel safe knowing that if I’m overwhelmed, someone will always have my back.”
But it’s not just Leslie’s coworkers who support her. Like all MedPro International Explorers, Leslie has an Employee Relations Manager. Senior Manager Gabriela Garrido is also an immigrant and moved to the US from Venezuela six years ago. Having experienced the challenges of moving to a new country and starting over, Gabby deeply understands what Leslie is going through. “Gabby is like my best friend. She calls me to check in and always supports me,” Leslie said.
Exploring New Adventures

When Leslie moved, she was not only launching her U.S. healthcare career, but she was also creating a new life outside of work. “There are plenty of nice places to explore around Belleville, and you’ll never run out of things to do. Plus, there’s a small but welcoming Filipino community, which makes it feel even more like home.”
Leslie loves exploring the variety of Asian food options and enjoys trying new restaurants. She’s also looking forward to spring, where she plans to try camping and fishing. Just a short drive away, St. Louis offers plenty of attractions and excitement, which she’s already had a chance to experience. Plus, Leslie has visited Chicago, Indiana, and California. She’s planning a trip to Texas in May—followed by visits to New York and Washington, D.C., to see the cherry blossoms.
Empowering Healthcare Professionals to Shape Their Own Success
Coming to the US and working as an ER nurse has been a dream come true for Leslie—but that dream just got even better. MedPro International recently launched a new program that gives healthcare professionals greater control over their careers. Under the new program, RNs can choose to complete their assignments in either 30 months or 5,000 hours or 36 months or 6,000 hours, depending on their situation. Even better, if they choose to stay at their facility after completing their commitment, they’ll receive a raise. “With all the overtime I work, I’ll definitely finish early,” Leslie said. “It’s exciting and gives us more flexibility and control over our careers.”
Leslie’s journey from the Philippines to Saudi Arabia and finally to Belleville, Illinois, has been marked by challenges, growth, and exciting new experiences. Through unwavering determination and the support of MedPro International, she has built a successful career as an ER nurse while embracing a fulfilling new life. From adapting to a different culture and forming strong connections with her coworkers to exploring new cities and discovering new hobbies, Leslie’s story is a powerful reminder that MedPro Explorers can achieve their dreams and thrive in their new environments.
