Understanding the ID requirements ahead of time can help avoid unnecessary stress on exam day.
What Makes an ID Acceptable
To be admitted into the NCLEX exam, candidates must present a valid form of identification. This identification must meet specific requirements set by the testing authorities.
Your ID must be physical, meaning digital forms are not accepted. It must also be current and not expired. Only government issued identification is accepted.
In addition, your ID must include your name written in Roman characters, along with a recent photograph and your signature.
Your Name Must Match Exactly
One of the most important details to pay attention to is how your name appears on your ID.
The first and last name on your identification must match exactly with the name you used when registering in the Pearson VUE system. Even small differences, such as missing letters or reversed names, can prevent you from being admitted to the exam.
Taking the time to double check this detail in advance can help ensure a smooth experience on test day.
When a Secondary ID Is Needed
If your primary identification does not include a signature but meets all other requirements, you will need to bring a secondary form of identification.
This secondary ID must include a signature written in Roman characters. The name on the secondary ID must match exactly with the first and last name on your primary ID, as well as the name you used when registering in the Pearson VUE system.
Both forms of identification must be consistent and meet all requirements in order to be accepted on exam day.
Important Note for International Testing
ID requirements differ depending on where you take your exam.
For candidates testing within the United States, acceptable government issued identification that meets all listed requirements may be used.
However, for candidates testing outside of the United States, a passport is required. According to the NCSBN: “NCLEX candidates seeking U.S. licensure must present a passport to test in any testing center outside the U.S. and territories.”
This means that even if another form of government issued ID meets general requirements, it will not be accepted at international testing centers.
What Happens If Your ID Is Not Accepted
If you arrive at the testing center without proper identification, you will not be allowed to take the exam.
In this case, you will be required to reschedule and pay another exam fee. This can delay your progress and add unnecessary stress, which is why preparation is so important.
