‘The Emerald City’

Dublin was named after the capital of Ireland by Jonathan Sawyer, an Irish immigrant who donated the land on which the city was built. Dublin has received several awards over the past 20 years, including a “City of Excellence” in 2000, a “Signature Community” in 2007, and a “Plan First Designation” in 2016, acknowledging the city’s proven progress in achieving its stated goals and vision. Explorers will enjoy relatively mild winters and hot summers in Dublin. January is the coldest month of the year, with lows averaging 34°F (1.1°C) but typical highs reaching 58°F (14.4°C). Fairview Park Hospital was named a U.S. News & World Report 2024 “High Performing” hospital in three procedures/conditions. Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center, located in nearby Macon, was ranked 17th in the state, and top-ranked Emory University Hospital, #2 Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital, and #3 Piedmont Atlanta Hospital are all located in Atlanta, just a two-hour drive west of Dublin.

 

Education

Explorers can enroll younger family members in Dublin City Schools. The district has an overall Niche.com grade of C with a 15:1 student-teacher ratio. There are 45 colleges and universities within 100 miles of Dublin for Explorers or members of their families to take classes or obtain advanced degrees, including but not limited to Middle Georgia State University, Mercer University, and Georgia Southern University.

 

Transportation

Most Dublin residents use their car to commute to and from work and during their off days. However, public transportation is available. The Heart of Georgia Regional Transit Authority (HOGRT) provides public bus service throughout the city and outlying rural areas.

Middle Georgia Regional Airport in Macon has daily flights to Baltimore/Washington International, from which Explorers can catch national and international flights. Explorers can also take nonstop flights out of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to cities in the United States and around the world.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument Park Visit the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s first speech, given on April 17, 1944. The park features a mural, a 7-foot sculpture, and an audio and self-guided walking tour.

Theatre Dublin Built in 1934, the theater now hosts concerts, shows, and plays for audiences of over 600.

Southern Pines Water Park Cool off on those hot Georgia summer days at the Southern Pines Water Park. Visitors can float down the Lazy River, get wild at Splash Pad, or venture down the three water slides. The park is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
